CAGEANA SUNSMILE: Chamber Music & ...

Saturday 15 December, 2012  at 8.30pm

Round Theatre, St James Cavalier Centre for Creativity & the Arts, Valletta (MALTA)

John Milton Cage was born on September 5, 1912, and he was the pioneer of “Indeterminancy,” where the composer gives the performer the right to interpret his music. Cage also experimented with musical instruments, for example, he attached objects to a piano’s strings to see what sounds it will produce. He called this the “prepared piano.” Cage also explored electronic music and believed in “chance music”; that everything we do is music. He died in New York City on August 12th, 1992.

The festival in miniature entitled “The Cage” which is divided into four evenings is dedicated to this American composer, the centenary of his birth and his twentieth anniversary of his death. It is revealed the appearance of vocal and musicality Cage made, among its various facets, in connection with the dance, percussion and piano. These comprise the most popular soundscapes that in life, the so-called real, the composer had to journey for five decades in connection with choreographer and dancer Merce Cunningham.

One of the purposes of this tribute to the composer is also to stress the aspect of contribution and social sensitivity of his work.
